Faculty and students at Little Big Horn College have been compiling Crow place names and the narratives associated with them in an ongoing project that began in 1996. Over five hundred names have been recorded. The majority are within historic Crow Territory but some are as far away as central Alberta, Utah, Oklahoma and Washington, D.C.

The handgame originated when some young Crow men were scouting in the hills within the Black Lodge District. They came upon two hills, on the sides of these two hills facing each other were ghosts chanting back and forth across the gully between them. They were playing the handgame, but instead of losing sticks they lost they lost a ghost player, until there was no one left on one of the sides. At this point the winners would call out a name and collect a soul. The young men witnessing this game, took it home with them and soon imitated the motions and songs. Over time this became the handgame we know today.
